A psychologist cannot read your mind. They are just ordinary people like you and me, who can help you and your mates with personal problems. They help you find better ways to think about things, feel about them, and react differently.
It may feel a little weird the first time you meet with one, but that’s because you’ve never done it before. In the first session, they’ll try and understand what’s causing you problems. It’s also a good chance to see if the two of you feel comfortable together.
It’s a bit like online dating or finding the right mechanic – you don’t always find them first time around. So try and relax and see how you feel about them. And if it doesn’t feel right after a few sessions, ask your doctor for a referral for another one. It’s totally fine.
BUT, whatever you do, do not give up. The right psychologist can help you feel so much better.
