Stigma flourishes in ignorance. And the only way to reduce that ignorance is for those who know the most about mental illness to speak out.
Those of us who suffer can’t have it both ways. Expecting corporations and communities to act with enlightenment is unrealistic if we’re not prepared to enlighten them.
Wearing an “I’m Fine” mask while working at the pace of a two-toed sloth, may only make people question your attitude or think you’re incompetent. Honesty, on the other hand might give you a chance for understanding and acceptance.
It will also save all that energy you once consumed trying to keep up appearances. And help you appreciate you are not weak, but just ill.
And everyone gets ill from time to time. Even bosses.
