I speak to a lot of young people these days. Being 94, I don’t have much choice.
One question I hear a lot is this: How come I am such a screw-up when everybody else has their shit together?
I smile my toothless old man smile and soothingly say, Worry not my child. You are not alone.
We are all screw-ups.
It’s true. We all have our insecurities but too many of us fall for the oldest trick in the book – judging our interiors by others’ exteriors. We think because people look cool or calm or confident, they are cool, calm or confident.
Fact is, nobody shows us their true self. At least, not publicly. If they did, Facebook and Instagram would’ve lasted as long as Usain Bolt’s soccer career. Anyone who tells you they really have their shit together is self-deluded or Donald Trump.
Fact is, you don’t have a clue what’s happening deep down with others, so quit comparing yourself.
You’re not better, you’re not worse, you just are. And the sooner you get that through your thick noggin, the cooler, calmer and confident you’ll be.
